Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport, IA
Established in 1856, the church was named St. Margaret (or St. Marguerite) for St. Margaret of Scotland. The Romanesque Revival style of the building was created with red brick and there were several additions incorporated into the original structure. Due to the parish out-growing the original structure, a new cathedral in Gothic style was planned in 1889, started in April 1890, and completed in 1891. The name was changed in 1889 due to the devotion of the parish to visions of the Sacred Heart which the pope granted. This cathedral was the first to be dedicated to the Sacred Heart in the United States.
The church interior features an extensive amount of woodwork and many Gothic windows–especially notable in the large stained glass window above the entrance. We replicated two sets of double doors in the same style to carry some of the beauty of the natural wood work from the interior to the front of the cathedral. One set of double doors is narrower and contained three tall, narrow windows in the center section; the other set of double doors contained four tall, narrow windows in the center section.
